Pixie Purse - Free Crochet Patten

Make a cute purse or bag using this free crochet pattern.

Pixie PurseThis Pixie Purse is very straightforward to do and uses only the Single Crochet stitch (Double Crochet UK). It is designed to be a wrist bag which hangs over the arm, however the strap can be adjusted in length to wear over the shoulder or around the neck if required. The purse is closed with a drawstring.

The purse is decorated with bead tassels which hang from the bottom and from the drawstring. These are made from glass beads threaded on bead cotton and can be made to any length.

The Pixie Purse has been designed using a standard Double Knitting yarn and is worked with a hook size slightly smaller than normal to achieve a firm fabric. However it will work with any yarn - a change in yarn thickness will simply mean that the size is different but the proportions will stay the same (assuming that you continue to use the appropriate sized hook for the substituted yarn). To make a purse to the dimensions given however, crochet to the gauge given.

Requirements:

50gms of Double Knitting Yarn
Beads and bead thread if required to make tassels

3.5mm crochet hook (or size required to achieve the gauge)

Gauge: 15 sc to 10cm (4 ins).

The bag is worked in the round starting at the tip, the number of stitches gradually increasing which forms the shaping.

Instructions

Note: When working Single Crochet work alternately into the front and back loops of the stitch below.

1/ Chain 3

2/ Single Crochet 5 stitches into chain.

3/ *Single Crochet into next 4 stitches and increase 1 in 5th stitch. Repeat from * 7 times until there are 12 stitches in round.

4/ *Single Crochet into next 5 stitches and increase 1 in the 6th stitch. Repeat from * 4 times until there are 16 stitches

5/ *Single Crochet into next 6 stitches and increase 1 in 7th stitch. Repeat from * until there are 51 stitches.

6/ Continue working on the 51 stitches until work measures 20 cms (8 ins) from the tip of the base.

7/ To make the holes for the draw string work as follows: Single Crochet 2 and make a chain stitch over the next stitch and repeat once round the work (mark the start of the hole row with a thread to make it easier to see where it started).

8/ Work 4 more rows of Single Crochet and then finish the bag by making 3 Chain Stitches before each single crochet in the top row which will give a small ruffle to the top of the bag.

10/ The strap is worked from side to side rather than from top to bottom to help stop the fabric from stretching. To make strap make a chain of 30 and work 8 rows of Single Crochet. Fasten off and stitch into place at either side of the bag above the drawstring holes.
